Description
If you've ever tuned into TV shows like "Animal Planet" or "Discovery" and found yourself pondering how scientists decode the language of animals, then this course is an absolute must. Much like us, animals rely on a diverse array of signals and cues to communicate with one another, with this vital information guiding their decision-making processes. Whether it's fighting, mating, selecting their ideal habitat, or any other crucial aspect of their lives, these decisions hinge on the pivotal signals and cues they perceive in their environment. Those who struggle to efficiently or accurately gather this information tend to experience reduced reproductive success and survival rates. This behavior is undeniably one of the most riveting and crucial subjects within the realm of animal behavior studies.
This course takes a blended approach, encompassing lectures, group discussions, and hands-on outdoor activities. Students will acquire a solid foundational understanding of animal communication, delving into various signal and cue types that animals utilize in their environment, information gathering and assessment, and the challenges they encounter in the face of environmental changes. Engaging discussions will be a regular feature, designed to immerse students in the subject matter and deepen their comprehension.
Subsequently, students will be divided into groups and embark on visits to multiple parks and natural habitats in Taipei city. Here, they will witness firsthand how these theoretical concepts manifest in the natural world. This hands-on experience provides an exciting opportunity for students to assume the role of animal behavior researchers. I will also guide them in collecting data, demonstrating the application of commonly employed methods within the field of behavioral ecology.
